If you want to hike through the longest and deepest slot canyon in the United States, Buckskin Gulch is where you should start. Stretching for more than 13 miles, this trail offers narrow sandstone walls, twisting corridors, and an otherworldly beauty you won’t find anywhere else. Many hikers visit for its incredible views, while others seek the challenge and sense of adventure it offers. Whatever your reason, you need the right information before you go.

Where it Is Located?

It’s is part of the Paria Canyon–Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area on the border of Utah and Arizona. The most common starting point is the Wire Pass Trailhead, about halfway between Kanab, Utah, and Page, Arizona. You’ll reach it via House Rock Valley Road, a dirt road that can be rough after rain. This road has no services, so bring everything you need before you get there.

Best Time to Hike

Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are the best seasons for hiking. Temperatures are more comfortable, and daylight hours are longer. Summer can be dangerously hot, with temperatures over 100°F. Winter may bring icy patches and short days that make hiking harder.

Permit Requirements

A permit is required to hike here, even for a day trip. The day-use fee is usually around $6 per person and $6 per dog. If you want to backpack overnight, you’ll need a separate overnight permit, which is harder to get because they limit the number available. Buy your permit online before your trip, since cell service is unreliable at the trailhead.

Choosing Your Hiking Route

There are two main ways to experience the canyon:

• Day Hike from Wire Pass: The Wire Pass route is the most popular. It’s about 3 miles round trip to the confluence where Wire Pass meets the main canyon. This section has a short ladder and beautiful, narrow passages.
• Full Through-Hike: If you want the complete experience, you can hike the full length of the canyon to Lees Ferry. This is a multi-day trip and requires careful planning for water and camping spots.

Trail Conditions and Hazards

Slot canyons are beautiful but come with risks. The main dangers here are:

• Flash Floods: Even rain miles away can send a sudden surge of water through the canyon. Check the weather for the entire region before you go.
• Deep Mud and Pools: You may have to wade through water that can be ankle- to waist-deep. Sand and mud can slow you down.
• Narrow Passages: Some sections are very tight. If you don’t like confined spaces, be prepared for a challenge.
• Limited Exits: Once you’re inside the main canyon, escape routes are few and often difficult to reach.
